‘This will not be tolerated’: Albany Police issue stern warning to hoon drivers after Emu Point burnouts

Albany officer-in-charge Acting Sen. Sgt Dave Costello has issued a stern warning to hoon drivers, saying the reckless driving will “not be tolerated”. The reminder comes after an 18-year-old P-plater was charged with reckless driving after allegedly doing burnouts on the sand and in the carpark near the Squid Shack at Emu Point on August 19. Police investigated after members of the public reported the behaviour. Using CCTV to investigate the disruptive behaviour police were able to charge the teen with reckless driving on August 21 and impound his vehicle. Sen. Sgt Costello said the Emu Point area is where people spend time to “relax” and enjoy the “serenity”. “This behaviour in a vehicle is not acceptable, particularly when there are members of the community, including children, in the vicinity,” he said. He said that even though police may not be present at the time of the crime it does not stop police from investigating and placing charges. “Just because persons may not be located at the time, an investigation will commence and consequences will follow,” Sen. Sgt Costello said. “Hoon driving is inherently dangerous to persons inside the vehicle and also to other road users and the community in general, and this will not be tolerated.”
