The South Coast: Surfing news from the South Coast and around the State

A video of West Australian charger Ollie Henry taking a beating at the infamous The Right has been circulating on social media. Known as an unpredictable heavy water slab, The Right attracts the best big wave surfers to test themselves against the raw power of the Southern Ocean. Notorious for being unpredictable and powerful, The Right is known to pop eardrums and in some cases break bones or knocked surfers unconscious. It takes years of preparation, skill and patience to catch a wave while keeping yourself and those around you safe. It is not a wave that should be tackled without guidance and a considerable amount of experience. In other surfing news, the finalists for the Australian Surfing Awards have been announced with a number of WA surfers receiving nominations. Margaret River-born Jack Robinson will be up for male surfer of the year while Taj Burrow will be inducted into the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame. The aforementioned charger, Henry, who spends time hunting heavy waves along WA’s deep South Coast, is up for the heavy water award. AACTA award-winning film Facing Monsters, featuring Kerby Brown is also up for surf video of the year. Denmark-born and raised surfer and activist Lucy Small is up for the Reeftip greater good award with Kate Allman. Together, the pair run Equal Pay for Equal Play, an organisation calling for equal recognition and opportunities for women at all levels of sport.
