Kangas 8 played out a nailbiting contest against Royals Saints 6 in the Albany Netball Association B2 competition on Saturday, emerging three-goal winners at the finish. Royals Saints scored the first goal to take a quick lead. Kangas responded through attackers Matilda Richardson and Meg Carthew, who worked brilliantly to stay active in the attacking circle in the first quarter. Despite their terrific start, Kangas trailed Royals Saints by two goals at the first change. Royals Saints continued a strong defensive display, pulling down rebounds from Kangas’ missed attempts as Torie Lethbridge worked tirelessly to rack up intercepts that prevented Kangas from breaking through their attacking third. Kangas’ Amelia Burgess was terrific, zipping along the baseline to assist in their scoring attack. The second-quarter run from Royals Saints pushed them five goals in front but Kangas dug deep with some long shots from Richardson to bring them within two goals at half-time. With the two sides locked on 21 goals apiece early in the last quarter, Kangas continued to chip away at Royals Saints’ defence down-court with well-timed leads. The goal-for-goal contest continued, with relentless rebounding from Royals Saints’ Lara Taipouras making it difficult for Kangas to break away. But the Kangas’ midcourt worked hard to push the ball into their attacking third and were too strong in the end, winning 28-25 and notching their second win of the season. In the other round eight B2 fixtures, Griffins 6 were too strong for Narrikup 9 to win 38-21, and Magpies 5 scored a hard-fought three-goal triumph over Griffins 7.
