The Shire of Jerramungup has placed temporary barrier fencing on the sandbar at the mouth of the Wellstead Estuary to protect the shorebird habitat during nesting season.

A variety of endangered and vulnerable shorebird species use the area for breeding, feeding and nesting and can be disturbed or harmed by foot, vehicle and animal traffic.

The temporary fencing has been reinstated after falling water levels, combined with an influx of holiday visitors, have made the area accessible to traffic once again.

The barrier had previously proved highly effective in protecting the shorebird’s habitat.

At its December 2022 meeting, the Shire council resolved to undertake community consultation on longer-term fencing of the estuary and reserve the right to erect short-term barriers to protect habitat when necessary.

The Shire is working with the local community and groups, which include the Fitzgerald Biosphere Group and local birders, with extensive experience and knowledge.

Information sessions are being held and signs are being installed to help inform the community and visitors of the environmental values of the area.

Issues or concerns about the area can be reported to the Shire at 9835 1022 or the Shire’s ranger at 0499 351 141.
