A strong representation from the Lower Great Southern Tennis Association will take part in a major regional tennis event in Geraldton starting on Sunday. The prestigious D’Arcy Slater Cup and Women in Tennis Foundation Cup will be played at the Geraldton Tennis Club from October 29 to November 1, attracting junior players from around WA. The LGSTA is set to send its biggest contingent in several years to the event with 16 juniors making up four teams that will hit the grass courts. They will compete against players from including Peel, Midwest, Upper Great Southern, Great Southern, South West, Central Districts, Pilbara, and Eastern Districts. State representatives Denby Sharpe and Tea Zizek will head up the Lower Great Southern’s division one boys and girls teams respectively. They will be joined by Lewis Ridge, Paige Michael, Adalyn Sharpe, Olivia Riggall, Caris Stone, James Grundy, Austin Slade, Hugo Riggall, Anneliese Slade, Ella North, Maggie O’Meehan, Dylan Stone, Asha Craig and George Riggall in the LGSTA teams. The D’Arcy Slater Cup is for the boys while the girls will take part in the Women in Tennis Foundation Cup. There are both singles and teams events and LGSTA junior coordinator Alex Riggall said the young group was itching to soak up the experience. “The last couple of years junior tennis has been rebuilding in our zone,” Riggall said. “This competition, while it has some prestige behind it, still encourages participation in rural kids. “They will have the best time and play a heap of tennis. Players from Tenterden and Kendenup are part of the Lower Great Southern teams while the remainder are part of the On Court Tennis program based in Albany. Denby Sharpe won the singles competition as a 10-year-old at last year’s tournament with the LGSTA team runner-up while Tea Zizek was runner-up in the girls singles last year. Alex Riggall said playing on grass courts would be a change their players would need to adapt to but they were confident the two girls and boys teams would gel well across the four days of action.
