Surfer Jesse Carter has lucky escape at Great Southern wave The Left after breaking his ankle on big wipeout

Surfer Jesse Carter had a lucky escape after a big wipeout on a mammoth wave in the Great Southern last week. Carter was taken to hospital after badly breaking his ankle on the dangerous break called “The Left” opposite the famous wave The Right, situated between Denmark and Walpole. A group of big-wave chasers, including surfer Zac Haynes, were in the water with surf photographer Trent Slatter on Wednesday when trouble struck. Carter had a wipeout on The Left when fellow surfer Jake Osman went in to rescue him. Osman retrieved his mate from the water but the pair were slammed by a wave, tossing them both off the jet ski. The pair were plucked to safety and taken back to the beach. Carter was nursing a broken ankle while the ski sunk and it was not recovered. Slater said it was a lucky escape from the scary incident. “This wave is literally next door (to The Right), it’s called The Left,” he said. “The Left breaks when the Right is not big enough but it breaks right on the rocks making it more dangerous. “It was pretty big, obviously not as big as The Right can get but around the 4m mark. “Jesse got wiped out big time, Jake went to rescue him and they got hit by a wave. “They both got saved but the ski didn’t, Jesse was carried up the beach and then off to hospital.” An ambulance was called to take Carter to Denmark Hospital and his break required surgery.
