A record amount of entries have filled Ocean Beach at the weekend as Denmark Surf Life Saving Club played host the 2019 SunSmart Country Carnival.

A staggering 932 competitors were in action from 26 of the 31 clubs across WA and DSLSC president Jane Kelsbie said it was three days to remember.

Local clubs Denmark and Albany had plenty of success across the competition with the highlight being Denmark’s breakthrough win the open male surf boat race.

For the first time in 47 years Denmark had a surf boat team enter the water at a proper competition and they upstaged their more experienced rivals to pull off an incredible win in the big swell.

Kelsbie said the major event ran smoothly and overall it was an amazing weekend of activities.

“The feedback we’ve had has been amazing,” she said.

“There was roughly 3000 people on the beach.

“A lot of people had never been to Denmark or Ocean Beach before and they all want to come back.

“Our younger competitors did incredibly well in trying conditions.

“One of the most outstanding results was the male surf boats.

“We’ve had the boat for a year, we got it from Cottesloe and the team have been training together for less than a year. Massive underdogs and they nailed it, the beach just erupted.”
