Summer’s itching to hit the court with new Lightning teammates as WANL announces return date
Denmark netballer Summer Stirling and her new Peel Lightning teammates will launch their WA Netball League campaign early next month after Netball WA announced last week the return of its premier competition.
The WA Netball League will start on Friday, July 3 and consist of a full set of 14 qualifying rounds and a finals series.
The proposed 2020 season will run from July 3 to October 16 and Netball WA are currently working through multiple fixture models to complete the season inside this time frame.
Fixtures are set to be released this month in accordance with the Government’s latest easing of restrictions.
Stirling, a talented shooter, resumed training with her Lightning teammates last week and said they were itching to get back on court.
“It’s been a long season and we’re excited to finally have a start date,” Stirling, pictured, said.
“We had our first training last Monday whilst maintaining social distancing and we’re all impatient to step out on to the court.
“Following the restrictions being lifted, we should return to full contact training next Monday.
“We all can’t wait for competition to begin and see how we size up against the other teams.”
The Denmark-raised Stirling joined Peel Lightning in the off-season, a new outfit in the eight team WANL.
The COVID-19 pandemic cut short Stirling’s initial pre-season training with Lightning teammates and she returned home to Denmark with her Edith Cowan University studies going online.
In 2018, Stirling played for the South East Demons, now known as the Southside Demons.
