Host club Denmark Surf Life Saving Club and close neighbours Albany Surf Life Saving Club returned impressive results at the 2020 Country and Masters Surf Life Saving Championships at Ocean Beach last weekend. Surf boat events at the championships were transferred to Middleton Beach on Sunday after safety concerns for competitors, with large swell at Ocean Beach, while several other water events in Denmark were cancelled. Denmark were handicap winners of the WA Country Championship after club members produced terrific results. City of Bunbury won the overall Country Championship title on 501 points ahead of Secret Harbour (338 points). Albany finished in third place overall on 297 points and Denmark were fourth on 155. On Sunday in tough conditions at Middleton Beach, Albany Fat Gannetts were champions of the open female surf boat event while Albany Wedgetails finished third. In the Country Championships, Albany won 13 gold medals and Denmark claimed five. North Cottesloe (451 points) won the overall masters championship, with Albany finishing in fifth place on 172 and Denmark ninth on 132. Albany took home eight gold medals across the masters competitions while Denmark added two more golds. Jason Bresanello won four gold medals, three in Masters and one in country champs to be Albany’s highest gold medal winner while Ella Neunuebel won two golds for Denmark. A total of 16 Albany nippers also qualified for States titles later this month.
