Strong finish at carnival
Albany Surf Life Saving Club finished in the top 10 in the 2017/18SunSmart Country Carnival last weekend.
The club finished as the second-best regional club in the competition at Geraldton, which had more than 600 competitors from 23 clubs.
Albany’s 10 youth competitors finished eighth on 67.7 points, the second-highest scoring regional club.
The four nippers competitors recorded the third-highest score of a regional club, finishing 11th on 33 points. Albany SLSC vice-president Sarah Bowles said given the strong windy conditions, messy surf and bluebottle jellyfish, the team was very impressed with results.
“All youth and nippers competitors from Albany finished in the top three of one or more events,” she said. “Also, with our women’s surf boat crew winning their division B final, it is reflective of the standard and performance of surf sports in Albany.”
While all competitors had top-three places, Fergus Martin won the U/14 male board race and the male Ironman, Molly Bowles came second in the U/15 female Ironman, Willem Freebury won the male U/15 flag race and Hamish Bowels won the U/11 1km male beach run.
