Strong field to bring trickery
A strong field of skiers will take to the Kalgan River this weekend for the annual Lower Great Southern Water Ski tournament, consisting of trick and slalom disciplines.
Albany Water Ski Club will host the popular event, entering its 52nd year, with 20 skiers nominated as of yesterday to take part across the two days of competition.
The tournament is part of the State series and will attract skiers from Perth along with many country skiers from places such as Kojonup to go with local Albany members.
Albany Water Ski Club commodore Dave McCracken said there was another strong field entered, which was a positive sign for the long-running tournament.
“Our location and good water conditions make it really attractive,” he said.
“You can ski out there regardless of what direction the wind is coming from because it’s protected.
“It’s a great spectacle to watch and there is plenty of viewing spots where you can watch, so we hope to see a good crowd.
It’s the longest continuous-running ski event, which is pleasing and there is Graham Budd, who has competed in every tournament, so that’s something special.”
Star Albany skier Steven Moss will be a major drawcard at the event.
There will be no jump competition like last year but skiers will take part in two rounds of slalom and trick over the weekend.
The tournament starts at 9am on Saturday, with the two rounds of trick and slalom to be held across Saturday and Sunday.
