Stirlings to Coast field days a chance to get off-farm and gain practical knowledge from region’s trials

Safety in shearing sheds will be placed front of mind at Stirlings to Coast Farmers Spring Field Days this week.
The field days on Thursday and Friday will feature presentations about shearing shed reviews conducted using the SafeSheds program.
The program has been developed by the Australian Wool Innovation and WA Shearing Industry Association with input from across the industry as a best-practice assessment resource.
“The Field Days will also see presentations on chemical residues in grain from CBH and international grain markets from Rabobank before we head out into the paddock,” SCF chief executive Lizzie Von Perger said.
Participants in Thursday’s field days will be taken by bus to visit SCF projects and on-farm trials near Mt Barker.
One of the sites visited will provide growers with the opportunity to see a new barley variety developed by Intergrain, Neo, grown side-by-side with RGT Planet and Maximus CL.
On Thursday, farmers will also get a look at a GRDC-backed nitrogen use efficiency trial, a pasture legumes trial run by Murdoch University and SCF’s winter wheat variety trial.
Friday’s field day will take participants to Woogenellup where they will be shown a GRDC-invested legume cover crop demonstration, a Farmanco-led herbicide resistance trial and a Summit nutrition trial.
Ms Von Perger said field days provided farmers an opportunity to get off-farm, network and gain practical knowledge from those working in the region.
“By conducting research trials and demonstrations under local conditions, we can provide data tailored to the south coastal growing regions,” she said.
