Steve Wolfe optimistic of success with Cable Boy at $100,000 Mt Barker Sprint

Leading Albany trainer Steve Wolfe is hopeful of victory in Sunday’s $100,000 Mt Barker Sprint, which will attract a stacked field of talent, including 2024 Fitzpatrick Plate winner Supersession. Wolfe’s six-year-old gelding Cable Boy is his only horse set to run in the Mt Barker Turf Club’s premier event, but he enters off the back of some scintillating form with three placings from his last four starts. Of those four starts Shaun McGruddy jockeyed three with a win and a place and will again be tasked to tackle the 1300m feature race on Sunday. Despite drawing barrier 11, Wolfe said Cable Boy’s good form in his recent 1200m races bodes well. “It’s unfortunate he didn’t draw a bit better like I thought he should have run in the money at the Fitzpatrick Plate but he drew wide,” Wolfe said. “But he is in good order and they can come from behind in (the) Barker Sprint and there’s no reason why he can’t be competitive. “I don’t think the distance will matter, I think he can run even 1400m whenever we want him to.” Rebecca Bayliss is set to run a two-pronged attack with Kohli ridden by Kyra Yuill and Beau Zoom steered by Natasha Faithfull. Adam Durrant’s stable will run Fitzpatrick Plate-winning galloper Supersession, but will not have the luxury of Perth legend William Pike on his mount. Chris and Michael Gangemi’s Resonator, who ran third in the Fitzpatrick Plate, is also set to saddle up along with Hayden Ballantyne’s Advanced. “Supersession won’t be as strong not having Pike, but he’s drawn well again so hopefully he gets cluttered up. “Beau Zoom was good in Mt Barker but it broke clear and it’s got a good gate again. “But I’m sure we will be competitive and with some luck, we won’t be far away.” Mt Barker Turf Club has come under heavy scrutiny due to concerns with soft and shifting ground sparking fears about its safety, but Wolfe said he thinks the track will be good to go. “I think it was just an error in judgement with excess water and they had a bit of rain. “But I’m sure they won’t be putting too much water on it this week. “The Mt Barker Sprint is an essential part of racing down here and hopefully the club has a good day which will be great for the community.”
