Steve Wolfe first trainer to claim the major two-year-old and three-year-old titles at WA Thoroughbred Awards

Veteran Albany trainer Steve Wolfe’s wonderful season was recognised at the 2020-21 WA Thoroughbred Awards, becoming the first trainer to claim the major two-year-old and three-year-old titles on Saturday night. Talented youngster Ex Sport Man was crowned the WA two-year-old racehorse of the year, while star stablemate Watch Me Dance was named the WA three-year-old racehorse of the year. It is the first time a trainer has claimed the juvenile awards double, and both horses are from Mungrup Stud in Narrikup. Ex Sport Man claimed the Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic before a thrilling win in the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate. The Playing God gelding also ran second in the Group 3 WA Sires’ Produce Stakes to take his career earnings in excess of $500,000 from six starts. Watch Me Dance claimed the two-year-old honours last year and stepped up again to be crowned the best three-year-old in the State. The I’m All the Talk filly triumphed in the Group 2 Sky Racing WA Guineas and Group 3 WA Champion Fillies Stakes. “It means more for the owners to take out these, they are the ones that put the money into them,” Wolfe said. “There has never been someone win both the two and three-year-old of the year so that’s a big achievement for the stable. “It’s a great thing for the Great Southern. “It’s great for the owners to be there, they’re the ones that make the game, they put the money in and I just find them the horses. “Both of them are very nice horses and have a lot of upsides.” Wolfe had a career best season in 2020-21. “We can have the two-year-old last season with Watch Me Dance and now the three-year-old this season,” he said. “Then we can bring up a new two-year-old this season with Ex Sport Man. It’s the third time we have won the two-year-old title, Wolfe Dreams won it a fair few years back. Watch Me Dance went from two-year-old to three-year-old of the year so that’s a massive achievement. She doesn’t have to do much more when you earn $800,000 after being a $30,000 purchase, she has done her job already.” Ex Sport Man and Watch Me Dance trialled on Monday and Wolfe is looking at a Group 2 $500,000 Sky Racing WA Guineas path for Ex Sport Man and a possible return in the Black Heart Bart Stakes for Watch Me Dance later this month. Meanwhile eight-year-old front runner Sir Snugalot began a memorable day for Wolfe, leading from start to finish to win at decent odds of $21 first up in race five at Belmont Park.
