Stellar season nets comeback jockey Brayden Gaerth leading apprentice gong at Great Southern racing awards

Talented apprentice Brayden Gaerth said it was special feeling to win the Great Southern Leading Apprentice award. Gaerth was born in Albany and used the Great Southern as a launching pad for his return to the saddle. After a promising start in the riding ranks, Gaerth’s career was disrupted by several drug-related suspensions. However, some time away from the industry and with natural maturity the 25-year-old has returned with a vengeance. He jumped back into race riding late last year and has ridden more than 50 provincial winners this season. Gaerth booted home 15 winners to claim the Leading Apprentice title, well clear of his nearest rival Cassey Martinan (6 wins), that was handed out on Friday night at the Great Southern racing awards. Teaming up well with top Great Southern trainer Roy Rogers was a key part of Gaerth’s successful 2022-23 season. “Obviously I’m very happy with the result,” he said. “I had great support from Roy and that probably made the difference. “I’m really happy to win the award, especially down in Albany after being born there. “Prince Ragnar was my first winner back riding so that was pretty special as well.” Gaerth is indentured to leading city trainer Adam Durrant and has 56 wins to his name. “I’m looking forward to the next few months,” Gaerth said. “I should be starting to ride a bit more in town on Saturdays. “I’m absolutely loving being back and I’m getting some really good opportunities at the moment.” GREAT SOUTHERN LEADING APPRENTICE Brayden Gaerth 15 wins Cassey Martinan 6 Austin Galati 4 Holly Watson 4 Rosie Mahony 4
