The Lower Great Southern Water Ski tournament will see a star-studded field take to the Kalgan River this weekend as the event moves into its 49th year.

This year, more than 30 skiers will be competing, including former national champion and Albany local Steven Moss.

The tournament includes a range of age divisions with slalom, trick and jump events held across a full day on Saturday and a half-day on Sunday.

Moss, who will compete in the slalom event, said the Albany Water Ski Club was looking forward to hosting it.

“It should be a really good event with a big turnout; it’s the 49th year so everyone is pretty excited about it,” he said

“The nationals are in Perth this year so everyone has been training hard and it looks like it’s going to be a really big weekend with a lot of good skiers coming down.”

Moss said the tournament typically drew plenty of spectators.

“This is one of the oldest places to ski in Australia and we usually get a good crowd and a good home following,” he said. “A lot of people like to come down and line the banks to watch so it’s always a good atmosphere to ski down here. “The conditions can always be different on the river; this is a good place to really test yourself.”

AWSC held a ski clinic this week to provide skiers with an opportunity to hone their skills before the weekend’s tournament.
