Spinners from across WA will gather in Albany for annual celebration of the traditional craft and creativity

Spinning enthusiasts from across WA will swap stories, skills and handmade creations when they gather in Albany for a day dedicated to the traditional craft.

Albany Spinners’ annual Spin In will be held at the Middleton Beach Bowling Club on Thursday, inviting spinners from around the State to bring their wheels and celebrate their shared love of spinning.

The annual gathering gives participants a chance to reconnect with friends, meet other spinners, and spend the day working on their craft.

Anyone interested in learning to spin is encouraged to go along, with experienced members available to offer advice and demonstrate their skills.

Visitors will be able to view a display of handmade spinning crafts and speak with experienced spinners about the techniques and equipment involved, with several traders there with fibres and accessories for sale.

This year marks 50 years of the Melanian Sheep Breeders Society and June Lynn from Perth will have a special display of Melanian garments and wool.

There will be a $10 entry fee to cover morning tea and lunch, as well as a door prize and raffles.

Additionally, there will be a workshop with Ms Lynn at the King River Hall on Friday from 2pm-8pm, with a $20 entry fee.

Committee member Teresa Brooks said there was plenty on offer, and invited anyone interested in arts and crafts to go and have a look.

“It’s an invitation to anyone that does crafts, especially spinning,” she said.

“There will be people there spinning with their spinning wheels, and other people will be knitting or crocheting or even hand-sewing articles.”

Ms Brooks said people came from across the State to enjoy the annual Spin In.

“We’ve had people from Northam, various Perth suburbs, Geraldton, Denmark and of course our local Albany members who come as well,” she said.

“Sometimes, we’ve even had them overseas.

“It’s a really good day to meet people and you build up friendships with others over the years.”

Albany spinners meet every Thursday at the Vancouver Arts Centre from 10am-2pm, and always welcome anyone wishing to learn the craft to come and join them.
