An Albany musical duo are set to delight guests at the Hilton Garden Inn when they play a Sunday session at the city’s new waterfront hotel.

Spindrift, comprising pianist Adrian Kenyon and singer Heidi Marques, will play at the Hilton on Sunday as the venue starts giving Albany’s musicians a platform.

Locals might have seen the two musicians in action in the Rainbow Coast Big Band or the Hep Shakers Showband at the Stirling Club.

This Sunday from 4pm to 7pm, they will be branching out on their own.

Kenyon said the duo would play Broadway-style music that became popular in the 1920s.

Their repertoire will range from samba and rumba through to the music of Billy Joel and Burt Bacharach.

“Although not well-known yet, this venue has the potential to be something special for both audiences and performers,” Kenyon said.

“It’s intimate and you can actually hear what’s going on, with no competition from the clanking of crockery and cutlery.”

Kenyon said it would be a great way to spend “a lazy Sunday afternoon”.

Kenyon was a jazz writer for the Sunday Times, the Daily News, The West Australian and his magazine, Music Maker/Artswest.

In 1983, he founded the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra during his time as the State’s first jazz coordinator.

Marques, who hails from South Africa, grew up listening to and often performing with her parents’ band in Natal.

She was also involved in the local theatre scene and has a degree in music history and music culture studies.
