Spencer Park turn tables on North Albany
An impressive Spencer Park outfit have recorded their second win of the new season, downing North Albany 4-1 in round five of the Albany Retravision Lower Great Southern Hockey Association men’s A-grade competition on Saturday afternoon.
Sporting new shirts with the words Spencer Park Tigers across them, Park proved far too strong for their rivals with returning gun Tim Yap and key linkman Sam Brown both starring.
Angus Milne was dangerous up front throughout the contest, scoring twice while youngster Sam Want and Yap also found the back of the net to hand Park three vital points.
Tim Burns, Darren Parks and Leander McQuade were all solid contributors for Redbacks, who beat Park 5-4 in their previous encounter this season.
In the other men’s A-grade match played last Thursday, Mt Barker ensured them remain unbeaten after downing a gallant Manypeaks outfit.
Mt Barker won 4-2 in the end, their fourth victory in five games with only a draw against North Albany in round 4 preventing a perfect record thus far.
Park and Peaks still have a game in hand but Mt Barker are seven points clear in an ominous sign from the defending premiers.
Meanwhile in the women’s A-grade competition, reigning premiers Redbacks thumped Park in their round 11 meeting last Saturday.
Young trio Sophie McDonald, Cionne Fage (four goals) and Tallulah Gouldthorp (two) ran rampant against the depleted Park side to cruise to a 9-1 win.
Redbacks scored very early in the piece before Park’s sole goal rewarded some strong lead-up play moments later as Jorja Williamson converted a penalty corner.
However, it was all one-way traffic from there as Redbacks chalked up their seventh victory of the campaign.
In Thursday’s nights match Mt Barker did enough to hold off Tigers 2-0 to cement second place on the ladder.
