Speedsters get on their soapboxes

Some of the State’s elite soapbox drivers will converge on Mt JUClarence as the Albany Soapbox Club hosts the 55th Smarter than Smoking National Soapbox Championship on Saturday.

With 25 competitors, comprising 14 local drivers and 11 from Perth, the annual event will see junior and senior divisions competing throughout the day.

Albany Soapbox Club president Larry Puls said the club was looking forward to the event.

“We’re pretty excited about JUSaturday,” he said.

“We got rained out last year but the weather looks like it will be OK this time around and I’m pretty sure we’re going to be able toJU race.

“It will be pretty competitive in the juniors; they’re our up-and-coming stars of the sport and it’s good to see strong numbers for them.”

The racing will kick off at 9am with a live performance of the national anthem from Olivia JUBarrass.

Prizes and giveaways, along with an Easter egg hunt, are some of JUthe activities that the club will be running on the day while a full canteen will be providing food and drinks for spectators. Puls encouraged the general public to check out the action.

“We’re hoping to get quite a few people up there watching,” he JUsaid.

“It’s generally an unnoticed sport in Albany but there will be plenty happening on Saturday.”
