South Coast Highway crash driver Bee Bee Lim fined for causing four-vehicle crash near Albany

A 46-year-old tourist has broken down in tears in court after causing a four-vehicle crash near Albany by trying to overtake a road train on double white lines. Representing herself in the Albany Magistrates Court last Thursday, Bee Bee Lim pleaded guilty to one charge of dangerous driving in relation to the crash in Kalgan on May 6. Police Prosecutor Sgt Dave Loverock said Lim, who was on holiday, was driving a Hyundai I30 hatchback west along South Coast Highway at 4.20pm. She had been driving behind a three-trailer road train for about an hour and had made several attempts to overtake it. Trying to overtake once more, Lim indicated and pulled out across double white lines into oncoming traffic. The driver of a Mitsubishi Magna travelling in the opposite direction tried to swerve to avoid a collision, when Lim panicked and swerved in the same direction, Sgt Loverock said. The driver of the Mitsubishi then swerved the other way, connecting with the front passenger side of Lim’s vehicle, then hitting the front of the road train. A fourth vehicle travelling behind the Mitsubishi was also involved in the crash. Lim, swerved off the road into a culvert and became lodged in bushland on the side of the road. Sgt Loverock said there were “no serious injuries reported”. Speaking in court, Lim repeatedly apologised for her actions and started to cry. “I am very, very sorry for what I have done,” she said. Magistrate Dianne Scaddan said before driving in another country, it was important to understand the road rules. “It is lucky people weren’t seriously injured or worse, including yourself,” she said. Lim was fined $1000 and ordered to pay court costs of $134.50
