Smith urges Albany to vote ‘YES’

Liberal Senator for Western Australia Dean Smith has urged those in Albany to vote ‘Yes’ in the same-sex marriage postal vote.

“Since 1961, the Marriage Act has been amended 20 times and amending it again to allow committed same-sex couples to marry will strengthen, not diminish, the institution of marriage,” Senator Smith said.

“This is a matter of equality before the law and the dignity of Australians in loving, committed relationships – nothing more.”

Mr Smith, an openly gay senator, has long supported same-sex marriage, despite opposition from those in his own party, including O’Connor Member Rick Wilson.

Senator Smith said the nation had an important decision to make over the next few weeks and encouraged everyone to have a respectful conversation on the subject.
