Singlefile Wines’ new deal with Albany vineyard makes it the storyteller cellar for the Great Southern region

The family army behind Denmark’s Singlefile Wines have not been resting on their laurels since being welcomed into the WA Tourism Awards’ Hall of Fame last month. Three times in a row the business won the wineries, distilleries and breweries section of the awards and that was enough for the Hall of Fame invite. It was an honour which co-founder Viv Snowden said at the time had been a long time coming, but the focus now is firmly on the future, according to her son-in-law and Singlefile’s chief executive Pat Corbett. He said the winery had just started working with an Albany vineyard, which means it is now engaged with suppliers from all the five areas of the Great Southern region. “It means our cellar might be in Denmark, but we like to be the storytellers of the entire region, be it Albany, Denmark, the Frankland River, Mt Barker and the Porongurups,” he said. “They all have different soils and micro-climates, and our customers can see how they present through the wines at our cellar door. “While, for example, Margaret River is renowned for its chardonnays and cabernets, the Great Southern is so large it can produce a world class standard of all the world-league varieties, and you can try them all at our cellar door.” Mr Corbett said there were other behind-the-scenes developments at the winery that would help Singlefile customers. “We are about to launch a new platform – it’s not exactly sexy but it will mean a better experience for everyone, whether they are at the cellar door, using the website or being part of our wine club,” he said. Singlefile Wines was founded in 2007 by geologists Phil and Viv Snowden and brought to life alongside their daughter Pam and her husband Pat. It has since grown from its beginnings as a family affair, but Mr Corbett said many employees had stayed the course and the trail of awards the winery has received owed much to the business’ staff. “To win the tourism award three times in a row – not just competing against other wineries but micro-breweries and distilleries as well — is brilliant and as much a testament to the staff as anyone else,” he said. “It’s really hats off to them.” As Hall of Famers, the winery will have to find a different category if it is to enter the WA Tourism Awards again in 2026. In the meantime, Mr Corbett will be hoping the new website contains the answer to what he called the winery’s “most asked question”. “Everybody wants to know if we do food,” he said. “We don’t but visitors are welcome to bring a picnic.”
