Shire of Plantagenet plans to loan $70,000 to Mt Barker Golf Club for bowling green resurfacing

The Shire of Plantagenet is set to loan $70,000 to the Mt Barker Golf Club for the resurfacing of a synthetic bowling green. At April’s Shire of Plantagenet council meeting, councillors agreed to offer the golf club the loan with a seven-year term to maturity, subject to conditions. The Shire will request a $70,000 self-supporting loan from the WA Treasury Corporation and publicly advertise the proposal for one month. The move comes after a previous loan given to the golf club to upgrade a separate bowling green — a loan which Shire president Chris Pavlovich said was due to be paid off next year. “There will be a small overlap between the old and the new loans, but apparently the second bowling green has come into need of urgent repair, so it’s quite timely to do that now,” Mr Pavlovich said. He said the existing artificial lawn on the bowling green had “started to deteriorate and break up” and needed replacing. “The golf club is one of our major not-for-profit sporting organisations,” Mr Pavlovich said. “It’s not only used for golf but also bowls, and it is also a social hub for the local community that has been well patronised for many, many years.”
