Shire of Katanning approves rate rise of 4.5 per cent with adoption of 2024-25 budget

Residents in the Shire of Katanning can expect a 4.5 per cent rise in their rates, following the council’s adoption of its 2024-25 budget. At its June 26 meeting, council voted to approve the rise, an increase less than the previous year’s 6.85 per cent. The minimum rates increased by 4.2 per cent from $1152 to $1200, affecting 542 properties. Operating employment costs are budgeted to rise by $454,287, due to an increase in salaries, insurance premiums, and the creation of three new positions. Salaries for elected members were also approved to increase, with the meeting fees for the president and councillors increased from $15,000 to $17,000. The president also received an $8000 raise on her allowance, and the deputy president $2000 on theirs. Road funding has been increased by $356,245, owing largely to external grants. Fees and charges have increased 3.4 per cent, with recreation and culture fees remaining the same. Shire president Kristy D’Aprile said the budget aimed to deliver key projects while preserving future financial sustainability. “This year’s budget has been modelled on 4.5 per cent increase which council considers strikes a fair balance between ensuring the long-term sustainability of the shire, whilst being cognisant of the rising cost-of-living pressures for our community,” she said. “The 24/25 capital budget aims to deliver several long-standing community projects including the construction of the Early Childhood Hub, the development of Quartermaine Oval, town and the Katanning Central Bush Fire Brigade Shed. “These projects wouldn’t be possible without the financial support of key State and Federal government agencies, Lotterywest and the Mindaroo Foundation. “The council conservatively aims to deliver these projects without raising any loans, and will continue to invest into reserves to ensure future financial stability.”
