Shining star in top spot
Local cycling star Craig Wiggins took out the WA State Criterium Championships under-19 men’s category in a nail biter at Technology Park Criterium Circuit in Bentley earlier this month.
Wiggins edged out Tyler Lindorff by 0.2sec. to claim victory as he continues his push to compete at the World Championships later this year.
The teenager reached a top speed of 53.6km/h in the 23-lap race.
The 17-year-old was among a handful of Albany riders who competed at the State championships, including siblings Danica and Emily Wiggins, who both finished second in their respective races.
Danica ended 1min. 21sec. behind Laura Hodges in the under-17 women’s event while Emily was behind Kyla Gilbertson in the under- 15 women’s race. Danica reached a top speed of 40.1km/h across the 15 laps, while Emily’s top speed through nine laps was 36.7km/h.
In the under-17 men’s event, Daniel Lee and Riley Heslop finished seventh and eighth respectively. Daniel finished 0.6sec. behind winner Sebastian Barrett, with his best speed of 47.6km/h the second-fastest in the division.
