Sex accused to stand trial on 1993 charge

Tim EdmundsAlbany Advertiser

A Bunbury man accused of sexually assaulting an intellectually disabled woman in her Albany home in 1993 will face trial later this year.

Geoffrey Leigh Barsby, 54, pleaded not guilty in Bunbury Magistrate’s Court last year to one count each of sexually penetrating an incapable person and deprivation of liberty.

In Albany District Court on Tuesday, the charge of deprivation of liberty was discontinued by the prosecution and a four-day trial was set to begin on November 28.

Defence lawyer Graeme Payne said he expected the plea of not guilty to the charge of sexually penetrating an incapable person to be maintained.

Mr Barsby will defend accusations he attacked the woman in her Albany home in November, 1993.

The matter will progress to a directions hearing on July 28 in Perth District Court before proceeding to trial. Mr Barsby’s bail has been extended.
