A ceremony to celebrate seven prominent indigenous members of the Great Southern community will be held next Monday by the Southern Aboriginal Corporation.

The awards will recognise the ongoing work and contribution of people who have made it their goal to improve the lives of the indigenous community around them.

SAC chief executive Asha Bhat said everyone was invited to come and congratulate the winners during the ceremony next Monday at 10.30am.

“The 2019 theme: Voice, Treaty and Truth, highlights Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have always wanted an enhanced role in decision-making in Australia’s democracy,” she said.

“We have introduced seven awards this year to celebrate significant work undertaken by an elder (male and female), a young person (male and female) and a community person (male and female).

“A special award has also been introduced to recognise a person who has worked hard to meet this year’s NAIDOC theme.”

The SAC will host a ceremony next to the Albany Entertainment Centre on Sunday to celebrate the first day of NAIDOC Week and the purchase of land for their proposed Kairli Cultural and Language Centre.

Community members can attend a men’s soup night at 6pm on Wednesday, which is an event to bring indigenous men together to have a yarn.
