Key forward Chris Wollaston was rewarded for his superb seven-goal performance on Saturday by winning the 2017 Jim Hull Medal after he helped guide Ongerup Football Association to a first-up win in division 2 of the Landmark Country Football Championships.

Wollaston was part of a dangerous OFA forward line that provided constant headaches for the undersized Great Southern Football League defence, as the 23-year-old finished with a game-high seven majors in his side’s 40-point triumph.

The Newdegate tall took several towering marks in attack for the OFA and was accurate in front of goal, finishing with 7.3 to be the game’s most dominant forward.

Wollaston booted two goals to help his side wrest momentum back in the first term after the GSFL had the first two majors of the game and he kicked two more goals in the third and fourth quarters to keep their opponents at bay.

A three-person voting panel awarded the medal named after the well-known country football identity Jim Hull. Wollaston received votes from Hull himself and Albany Advertiser reporter Cameron Newbold to edge out gun midfielder Isaac Baum.

Wollaston, who received two votes from the umpires, was the medal recipient with eight votes just ahead of Baum (seven votes), while GSFL pair Matt Orzel and David Stone were also given votes.

He is the second player to receive the medal, instigated last year and awarded every time the two neighbouring competitions play each other during these championships.
