Second Sets in the South event set to grow in quality and quantity over two big days of burnouts in Albany

Revheads and motoring enthusiasts will take over Attwell Park Speedway for a big two days of burning rubber next weekend for Sets in the South. The event returns to Albany for its second year with more than 130 entrants already registered with time still to sign up, double the number that competed last year. Organiser Paul Phillips said registrations would be capped at 160 to ensure the event runs smoothly. Last year’s inaugural two-day competition was a standalone event, but this year it is the second round of the West Oz Burnout Series, serving as a qualifying round for those hoping to compete in the Burnout Masters. Mr Phillips said the unique shape of the Attwell Park pad had attracted more people in better cars keen to test their skills. “We’re expecting to see 14-16 blown cars that would mostly cost in the range of $80,000 to $150,000 — so they are not just the cheap things you can generally see, so that will be pretty exciting.” Friday will end with three sets of dual burnout demonstrations as committee members take two V6s on to the pad, followed by two V8s and then two blown cars. Mr Phillips said the demonstration would be a “bit higher risk, but hopefully exciting for the crowd”. “It is a first-of-its-kind thing, but hopefully we can make it stay,” he said. Mr Phillips said Sets in the South would be family-friendly with live music from Dig the Dust and The Retrospects capping each night off. Gates open at 11am on Friday ahead of the first rounds qualifying from midday. Qualifying rounds will continue on Saturday from 8.45am with finals scheduled to take place from 7pm.
