Rising apprentice Tyla Becker is eager to make a statement in the region after joining Steve Wolfe stable

Leading Great Southern trainer Steve Wolfe has welcomed rising apprentice Tyla Becker for the upcoming 2020-21 Great Southern racing season that kicks off this Sunday.

The Great Southern racing season will officially hold its first meeting of the season at Percy Spencer Racecourse, and Becker will be Wolfe’s stable apprentice for the season.

The chance to get her foot in the door with a big country stable and more experience on grass are key reasons behind the move down south for Becker.

Becker started her apprenticeship with Perth trainer Luke Fernie and will be on loan to Wolfe for the Great Southern season.

The 23-year-old is eager to make a statement in the region and continue the bright start to her riding career after finishing as the leading apprentice in Carnarvon.

“I’m hoping to go for leading apprentice in Albany this season,” she said.

“I did majority of my first five months riding on the dirt, and the dirt season has recently finished so I was looking for an opportunity to get my foot in the door with a big country stable for some more grass experience.

“I spoke to Ron Fleming (Racing and Wagering WA’s Racing Careers and Industry Training Manager) and he suggested it would be a good idea going on loan to Steve for the Albany season as he has plenty of horses in work.

“I’m definitely looking forward to improving my riding and experience in Albany.”

Becker rode her first winner at only her third race ride aboard Super Ex at York and has notched 16 winners from 161 race starts to date since starting in April.
