Riders brave wet and muddy conditions in Albany Mountain Bike Club XCO event
Two-time Albany Sportsperson of the Year Craig Wiggins is not only fast on two wheels on the bitumen, he’s just as quick off-road.
A total of 41 riders braved wet and muddy conditions to compete in the XCO event run by Albany Mountain Bike Club at Mt Melville on Sunday.
Wiggins competed in the men’s A division and dominated throughout the six laps to stop the clock in a sizzling time of 1hr.02min.52secs.
He finished more than 15 minutes ahead of youngster Riley Heslop while Martin Collins filled the podium.
Matt Bascombe recorded a time of 1:10.52 across five laps to take out the men’s B division in front of Dwayne Sobey and Jeff Barnes.
In the men’s C division, Brad Drummond won a tight race by just over a minute ahead of Ben Sadler and Mark Weatherell after four laps.
Emily Wiggins was the only competitor in the women’s A but still recorded a strong time of 1:24.05 in five laps.
The under-15 men’s category attracted 10 riders with Vincent Bascombe defeating Will Da Pozzo and Jackson Poett over three laps.
Hayley Poett and Zoe Bascombe battled over three laps in the under-13 girls event with Poett winning by just over a minute.
Lorcan Contier won narrowly over Joshua Ponsford and Jake Drummond in the under-13 boys event over three laps.
Beau Sobey defeated Seamus Contier and Mackenzie Stables after two laps in the under-9 boys category while Randall Wiggins took out the men’s E-MTB category.
