Rex pledges ‘much better service’ after being awarded five-year contract for regulated Albany-Perth route

Rex Airlines will continue to exclusively operate the commercial route between Albany and Perth for at least the next five years despite drawing criticism over the reliability of its performance from. Transport Minister Rita Saffioti announced on Tuesday that Rex’s tender application to continue operating the regulated route until July 2028 had been successful. Rex Group executive chairman Lim Kim Hai said global supply-chain shocks and skilled labour shortages were to blame for the company not matching “the very high standards” it had previously delivered in WA. He said he wanted to assure WA regional passengers “they are still getting the best of what is practically possible” and said the company’s on-time departure record over the last year compared favourably to other airlines. “Rex also had the lowest cancellation rate of all the major carriers,” he said. He said the company would “repay the trust of the WA State Government by putting maximum priority on the services in the State”. “I will lead a delegation of Rex’s board members and senior management this weekend to develop plans with the local team to achieve much better service delivery,” he said. The winning bid includes a commitment from Rex to provide a minimum of 24 weekly return services between Albany and Perth. The number of weekly flights between the two cities initially increased from 20 to 24 as part of a three-month trial announced in April. It was one of many successful regional air route tenders announced that will all see existing operators continue to operate on routes they already had exclusive rights to. Ms Saffioti said Rex’s tender submission “demonstrated they were best placed to continue operating” the Albany to Perth route and that the company had a long history of providing services for regional residents. “There’s no question that recent services, particularly on the Albany and Esperance routes, have not met community expectations, but we are committed to working with our partner airlines to get services back to the high level they once were,” she said. “The recent disruptions are the result of recruitment and supply-chain challenges affecting the entire aviation sector. “I’ve recently held discussions with Rex to ensure every effort is being made to improve the current level of service, and I am pleased a delegation of Rex senior management will be coming to WA in the next week to develop plans for improving the outcomes for their customers.” Existing capped airfares offered by the airline in conjunction with the State Government will also continue.
