Premiers Royals dominate the much-anticipated 2020 Albany Advertiser Great Southern Football League Team of the Year that has been announced this week. After a lengthy discussion between Advertiser sports reporters, the final playing 22 were selected from a squad of 38 at the completion of the shortened season. The final 22 were picked with consideration given to games played, consistency, form, team balance and voting in major awards, including the Kleemann Medal. A total of 11 players received their first-ever selection in the team. For the second straight season, the Lions feature heavily in the team, with nine players selected in the final 22 and premiership mentor Andrew Ruck named coach. Denmark-Walpole and Railways have four players each in the team, North Albany have three, while Mt Barker have two representatives. Albany had four players in the initial squad but none made the cut. Dominant big man Shayne Zanetti was an obvious choice as ruckman, and the team contains Tigers duo and Kleemann medallists Kane Shephard and Matt Palfrey along with highly rated Kangas youngster Talon Delacey. Ryan Flick, Ryan Kinnear, Zanetti, Delacey, Declan McNamara, Shephard, Stephen Beal, Paul Donaldson, Cameron Allison, Jayden Scott and Bryce Blaszkow feature in the team for the first time.
