Polonia clinched the 2019 men’s premier league title following an emphatic win over Albany Rovers in round 13 of the Great Southern Soccer Association season on Saturday night.

As their nearest rival Phoenix could only manage a draw one pitch over, Polonia continued their superb season with a 5-0 triumph to seal the silverware for the first time since they won the league back in 2015.

Two goals in the opening half had Polonia in control and they were again dangerous pressing forward in the last 45 minutes as their 10th win in 13 league games gave them an unassailable lead at the top of the standings.

Young guns Jared Wiegele and Tom Hunt, who have been central to their side rising to prominence, both scored goals while Nathan Griffiths was also on the scoresheet.

With three rounds remaining, Polonia are now 11 points clear of Phoenix after they drew 3-3 with last season’s league champions Caledonians.

Phoenix came from a goal down at half-time to pinch a draw with Caledonians, as Leroy van den Dool scored a brace and Beau Timmer also found the back of the net.

Kieran Loveridge, Nicholas Fox and Ben Grey helped Caledonians earn a point.

The men’s reserves league title is still up for grabs after top two teams Albany-Bayswater and Polonia played out a thrilling 5-5 draw on Saturday afternoon.

Jason Wilson kept bobbing up for Polonia, constantly causing problems for Albany-Bayswater as he finished with four goals.

Albany-Bayswater, who had James Opuni score twice, are two points ahead of Polonia in the race for the league crown.

Royals secured their sixth win of the season to remain a mathematical chance of winning the league, downing Rovers 3-0.

A brace to Jonathon Darby and a third goal from Cowan Wise guided the third placed Royals home.

Meanwhile, Denmark have chalked up a fourth straight women’s premier league title, their remarkable run in the GSSA continuing in 2019.

On Friday night that ticked the final box, winning an unrivalled fourth successive league trophy with a 5-0 win over main rivals Polonia. Ebony Thompson was the star, finishing with four goals as Denmark made it 13 wins on the trot this season.

In the other round 13 games, Phoenix thumped Royals 7-1 as Courtney Dekker netted a hat-trick while Port Albany beat Caledonians 3-0.
