Police warn drivers following long weekend blitz

The Great Southern’s top cop says he is disappointed about the prevalence of drug drivers on the roads in the region after eight people failed roadside drug tests in a short period of time on the long weekend in Albany.

Great Southern police district Superintendent Ian Clarke said although the majority of driver behaviour was “reasonably good”, speeding and drug-drivers were still endangering other motorists during the busy period.

“Eight people alone failed roadside drug tests on Friday night, which is very concerning,” Supt Clarke said. “From my perspective, again we are calling on the community to take some responsi-bility.”

Supt Clarke said drivers were detected at more than 140km/h on Albany Highway during the double demerit period, despite the highly visible police presence and dangers of more traffic.

A road policing operation uncovered 30g of methamphetamine as officers from stations including Williams, Wagin, Narrogin and Boddington stopped drivers on Albany Highway.

A Perth man was charged with possessing methamphetamine with intent to sell or supply, after police and a drug detection dog allegedly discovered 28g of the drug. Police also conducted 3807 breath tests and a total of 19 MDMA possession charges and 14 speeding infringements were also issued.

Two people were hospitalised after a serious crash 2km south of Williams on Albany Highway on Tuesday.
