Police say man put his foot in it trying to flee after stealing car in Albany

A Perth man allegedly jumped across roofs in Orana on Wednesday in a bid to shake police after stealing a car from a Yakamia home. On Wednesday, Albany police posted a photo on Facebook of a silver Holden Commodore they said had been stolen from a driveway in Bethel Way about 7am that day. Police say a woman was preparing to go to work, only to come out of her house and see her car being driven down the street. She chased the car down the street before calling police, who searched the area but could not find the vehicle. About 8.30am, police attended a house on McGonnell Road to execute a search warrant on what they said was an unrelated matter. Officers entered the backyard of the property and found a 38-year-old man, who scaled the roof of the house after police told him to stop. Police say the man jumped on to a neighbouring house, putting his foot through the roof, before fleeing into the backyard and scaling a fence. He was arrested nearby. The man received medical attention at the scene and was taken to Albany Health Campus for a check-up. Albany Sen. Const. Jeff Daniels said the man was injured while trying to escape police. “When he jumped on to the second roof, he put his foot through the roof and injured his heel,” Sen. Const. Daniels said. “The search warrant was carried out, unrelated to the stolen car but the vehicle in question was found in the backyard of the property which raised suspicions.” The 38-year-old Perth man was charged with stealing a motor vehicle and unlawful damage. He is set to face Albany Magistrate’s Court on September 16.
