Police investigating spate of six burglaries in one night in Albany’s CBD

A string of businesses in Albany’s CBD have been targeted by thieves in an overnight crime spree. Several business owners arrived at work on Friday morning to find they had been burgled, with entry gained by forcing a window or door open. Albany police are investigating the six burglaries that occurred between midnight on February 17 and 4am on February 18. Three businesses on Aberdeen Street were hit, while burglaries also occurred at premises on Collie Street, Grey Street West and York Street. Forensic officers examined the crime scenes on Friday morning. Albany police said no items of high value had been reported stolen at this stage. Sen. Sgt Hugh Letessier said on Monday that police were yet to make any arrests. “We suspect they are targeting cash and high-value stuff,” he said. “They have all predominantly broke locks to enter the premises, forcing doors and windows and ransacking the places by going through drawers and cupboards. “Very little stolen property has been reported at each of these businesses. “We absolutely think they are linked and we believe the same offender or offenders are responsible for this particular burglary spree.” Albany police are also continuing their investigations into a separate burglary spree on Chester Pass Road between February 12 and 15. Seven commercial burglaries were reported on Chester Pass Road within four days.
