Police charge tourist with dangerous driving after horror four-vehicle highway crash near Albany

A 46-year-old tourist will front Albany Magistrates Court this week after allegedly causing a crash on South Coast Highway which destroyed three cars and left three people in hospital. About 4.30pm last Friday, emergency services were called to a crash involving three cars and a truck on South Coast Highway, near Churchlane Road, in Kalgan. Police allege the 46-year-old woman was overtaking on double white lines when she drove head-on into another car while on the wrong side of the road. A vehicle travelling behind her was also caught up in the crash. The car which she hit head-on, meanwhile, struck the trailer of a passing truck. All three cars were written off in the smash while the truck sustained heavy damage to an axle and wheels on one of its trailers. Three people were taken to Albany Health Campus for treatment — a woman in her 50s, a woman in her 40s and a man in his 40s – for minor injuries. The four-vehicle crash left South Coast Highway closed for several hours. As a result of their investigations, police have charged the 46-year-old female tourist in relation to the crash. The woman was arrested at the scene and later charged with dangerous driving. She will face Albany Magistrates Court on Thursday. Albany officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Hugh Letessier said it was staggering that no one was seriously injured. “It was extremely fortunate there were no serious injuries from this crash,” Sen. Sgt Letessier said.
