Peake defends his title at the 2020 State Sand Greens Championship at Riverview Golf Club

Talented golfer Ryan Peake has successfully defended his 36-hole stroke championship, claiming victory on the fairways of Riverview Golf Club in last week’s 2020 Aglime Sand Greens Championship of WA. In all, 164 players took part in a two-person Ambrose event on Thursday before 192 golfers contested each of the following three days of competition. Peake, a Lakelands Golf Club member, held off a fast-finishing Adam Davey from Busselton Golf Club while Brookton golfer Chris Rawes and Daniel Negus from Northam filled third and fourth place respectively. The back-to-back winner took home the title with a 4-under par 36-hole score of 140 after recording rounds of 72 and 68 and finished one stroke ahead of playing partner, Davey. Peake started the second day two shots off leader Ewan Sewell from Manjimup but early birdies on the second and third hole helped him hit the lead before adding a third birdie on the ninth hole got him to 3-under. Davey would not let Peake steal the show, sinking four birdies and a bogey on the front nine to have him 2-under par and one stroke behind. Rawes had a strong first nine holes and his birdie on the second hole moved him level with Davey on 2-under with nine holes to play. The championship turned into a two-person battle after an even par on the back nine from Rawes was not enough to keep up with Peake and Davey. Davey hit birdies on the 11th and 12th after bogeying hole 10 to move up to 3-under. Peake quickly gave a shot back to Davey with a bogey on the 12th after birding the 11th. Peake took a one-stroke lead into the final two holes after parring the 16th and Davey could only manage a bogey. However, a wayward tee shot from Peake on the 17th would give Davey the chance to putt for birdie and draw level but his putt did not drop. Davey had a chance to eagle the final hole but it fell agonisingly short and Peake rolled home his testing putt to clinch his third Sand Green Championship. Cranbrook resident Mark Adams and Mt Barker Golf Club member Peter Steicke shared the spoils in the 36-hole net competition. Adams and Steicke could not be separated at the end of two rounds finishing on a total of 141 after hitting 70 and 71 respectively. Colin Ashby rounded out the podium after hitting rounds of 73 and 69 to finish one shot off the winners on 142. Alan and Bruce Edwards from Serpentine Golf Club took out the two-person Ambrose competition on Thursday with a 63.5 net. Bunbury resident Tim Gilotti broke the Riverview course record with a round of 76 previously set by Riverview member George Ray in 2010 with an impressive score of 68.
