The WA Country Football League last week announced a 30-man State Country squad ahead of its clash with South Australia at Fremantle Community Bank Oval this Saturday night, with Matt Orzel the sole Great Southern Football League representative selected.

Orzel was picked among a star-studded WA State Country side, which contains a host of former AFL and WAFL players as they look to improve on last year’s 36-point loss to South Australia.

WA coach Craig Walker finalised his squad of 30 players after the Landmark Country Football Championships played in Perth earlier this month and Orzel got the nod after another superb carnival in the midfield.

A prolific ball-winner with North Albany, Orzel was part of the WA State Country side last year and is a strong chance to be picked in the final 22 players that will take to the field at 5pm this Saturday.

Key forward Matt Dickie, who plays for Tigers in the Newman National Football League, represented the GSFL at the Landmark championships and was also named in the 30-man squad.

The Great Southern region will also have a link, with former North Albany defender and 14-game Carlton player Josh Bootsma picked after a stellar season for Katanning in the Upper Great Southern Football League.

Jordan McAllister, who was part of last year’s State Country side, is also in the squad after playing for the Ongerup Football Association at the recent carnival, but has also played for Ravensthorpe in the Ravensthorpe and Districts Football Association, along with Gibson in the Esperance District Football Association.

The final 22-man side will be released later this week and the match will be played after the WAFL league fixture between South Fremantle and West Perth.
