Ongerup finish with a flurry to down Eastern Districts
Ongerup Football Association finished the Great Southern Colts Carnival with a win after an impressive result over Eastern Districts to claim seventh place overall on Sunday.
After a tense two-point loss to Esperance in their first match on Saturday and then a heavy defeat at the hands of rivals Great Southern Storm, Ongerup faced fellow winless side Eastern Districts in the seventh and eighth playoff.
A four-goal first term helped Ongerup skip ahead before Eastern Districts hit the front in the second quarter.
Ongerup were able to hold their opponents scoreless in the third before adding two more goals in the last on their way to victory, 9.8 (62) to 6.11 (47).
Bailey McGlinn was outstanding, while Todd Retallack, Hayden Richter and Luke Henderson (three goals) were also strong contributors. It could have been a two-win campaign for Ongerup after coughing up a 12-point lead at three-quarter-time in their clash with Esperance.
Esperance kicked a late goal to prevail, 12.9 (81) to 12.7 (79) with Henderson booting four goals for Ongerup to be among their better players, along with Retallack, Cody Harris and Richter.
Ongerup were outclassed by the Storm outfit later that afternoon, kicking only a point in a 199-point defeat with Harris, Braden Retallack and Blair Watson working hard throughout.
Richter capped a sensational carnival by being named in the Great Southern 20.
