Ocean Heroes’ South Coast tour brings accessible surfing to people with Autism

Ocean Heroes is seeking volunteers for their south coast tour to help people with autism access the ocean in a safe and inclusive environment. The Perth-based not-for-profit will run inclusive surfing days in Denmark and Albany this weekend from 9am to 1.30pm with registrations now open online. Started in 2016, Ocean Heroes delivers free surfing programs for people with autism to communities around WA, travelling regionally from now through to September. “It’s a way for the autism community to access the ocean in a safe and inclusive environment and build self-confidence and connection with the community,” said Ocean Heroes Volunteer Coordinator Em Saikovski. “It’s also a way for the parents and family of these usually young people with autism to come together and create an inclusive environment for everyone.“ “We have plenty of spaces still available and we would love to include as many people as possible.” This is the third time Ocean Heros has run a south coast tour. “We have bought down a team of volunteers from Perth but we are also looking for any local crew who are keen to get involved and come and lend a hand,” Ms Saikovski said. The Denmark session will take place at Ocean Beach on Saturday morning and Middleton Beach in Albany on Sunday. The regional events are supported by Telethon with the south coast leg supported by Southern Ports and Feel Good inc.
