Normal services set to resume in Mt Barker for Anzac Day 2022
The Shire of Plantagenet will hold its traditional range of Anzac Day events on Monday after last year’s commemorations were impacted by COVID-19 restrictions.
The Mt Barker RSL sub-branch will lead a dawn service ceremony at the Mt Barker War Memorial on Memorial Road from 6am.
After the dawn service, RSL members will retire to RSL headquarters for a gunfire breakfast.
At 10.30am, RSL members will march to Memorial Park in front of the cenotaph.
There, at 11am, a wreath laying ceremony will take place with poetry readings, the national anthem and the Last Post.
One of the RSL’s members, whose great-grandfather’s name is featured on the cenotaph, will perform a poetry reading and speech in his honour.
Mt Barker RSL sub-branch president Maurice Draper said he expected about 200 people to attend the town’s dawn service.
In addition to the ceremonies on Anzac Day, schools in the Shire of Plantagenet will take part in a Anzac-themed creative writing competition that will be judged by local RSL members.
