Mt Barker should soon have a new playground and family-friendly recreational precinct, thanks in part to a Lotterywest grant of $860,021.

On the cards for the Wilson Park youth recreational zone is a new skatepark, pump track and multi-use space, plus upgrades to lighting, street furniture and the carpark.

The Lotterywest grant will help pay for the first stage of the new zone, a multi-million-dollar project which is part of the Wilson Park Recreational Masterplan endorsed by the Shire of Plantagenet in February 2024.

Shire president Len Handasyde said the number of people living in the shire was growing and the new park would help people make Mt Barker their home.

“The shire continues to experience steady population growth,” he said.

“This means infrastructure, facilities and activities for families and young people need to grow too.

“The youth recreation zone will significantly enhance the skateboarding, BMX, scooter and mountain biking opportunities in Mt Barker.”

The council allocated $1.6 million towards the redevelopment in its 2025-26 budget.

The shire also has $506,005 from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries as a forward planning grant.

The masterplan was developed in tandem with organisations including Kendenup Playgroup, the Mt Barker Lions Club and the Mt Barker Mountain Bike Group.
