Mt Barker hosts successful Lower Great Southern Tennis Association junior singles championships

Terrific tennis from the region’s up and coming young talent was on display in Mt Barker last Sunday. The Mt Barker Tennis Club hosted the Lower Great Southern Tennis Association’s junior singles tournament with nearly 40 competitors hitting the courts. Clubs from Albany, Kendenup, Tenterden, Mt Barker, Frankland River and Denmark were well represented at the event. Players were grouped according to the type of tennis ball they are being coached with, rather than through age or ability. The LGSTA has found this to be the fairest way to ensure all players enjoy their day of competition. In the yellow ball group, Denby Sharpe was crowned boys champion ahead of runner-up James Grundy while in the girls division Tea Zizek was the winner and Adalyn Sharpe runner-up. The girls green ball category was won by Caris Stone ahead of runner-up Jes Gatti and in the boys Ando Gatti proved too strong for runner-up Dylan Stone. Clancy Beech capped a good day by winning the orange ball boys division from runner-up Henry King. The mixed red ball winner was Lillian O’Meehan ahead of runner-up Jack Riggall. LGSTA president Les Bairstow said the junior championships was a fantastic day. “A massive thankyou to the Mt Barker Tennis Club for the use of their great facilities,” Bairstow said. “The central location was perfect for all who travelled from various parts of the region.”
