Mt Barker girl Maisie Hemmings climbs three peaks in one day to raise money for sick mother

Mt Barker girl Maisie Hemmings climbed three peaks in one day for her mother this month, raising money for Cancer Council WA’s Crawford Lodge. Crawford Lodge is a home away from home for regional cancer patients, offering free accommodation in Perth for people like Maisie’s mum, Casey. Mrs Hemmings was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer last year. Since then, eight-year-old Maisie has raised more than $25,000 for breast cancer research and care facilities. The Hemmings family were living in Karratha last year when they received the devastating news. “My mum had to receive eight sessions of chemotherapy followed by seven weeks of radio therapy,” Maisie said. “When you live in Karratha, it is a long way to go to Perth so Mum took the plane and stayed at Crawford Lodge. “Sometimes we went as a family and Crawford Lodge helped us with a family unit. “The funds raised will go to Crawford Lodge to help improve the facilities.” While in Karratha, Maisie and her dad Kevin rode from Karratha to Dampier to help raise money for breast cancer treatment. Their ride raised $23,232 for the Breast Cancer Research Centre WA. This year, since moving to Mt Barker, Maisie has continued to push herself for a good cause, climbing Castle Rock, Mt Trio and Bluff Knoll in under eight hours. “At the moment I have raised $2750,” she said. “I hope to raise over $3000. I have a stall at the Mt Barker, Mountains and Murals festival this weekend.” Maisie’s “3 Peaks for Crawford Lodge” fundraiser has received about 60 donations so far. “Crawford Lodge helped my family when we needed it,” Maisie said. “I feel we should repay the favour.” To donate, visit Maisie’s stall at the Mountains and Murals Festival markets on Sunday or visit:
