WA Rover Scouts has chosen the Albany area to host Scouts from across the country for its annual camp, the SandMoot 2020 — The Greatest Moot on Earth.

For those wondering what a SandMoot is, the term relates to being on or close to the water and a moot is a gathering of Rover Scouts.

Rover Scouts are made up of 18 to 25-year-olds and are the oldest youth section in the scouting movement.

Over the Labour Day long weekend, 87 scouts from several groups across the country will gather together to enjoy one of WA’s greatest areas for exploring.

WA Rover Scouts Ciara O’Hanlon said Albany was full of great opportunities for the scouts.

“The SandMoot committee chose Albany because it boasts an incredible coastline to fit in with the sand theme, a bustling community with lots of options for us to provide service, and many great places nearby for us to do day expeditions to the Stirling Range and Porongurups, the King River and a great wine region in Denmark,” she said.

“SandMoot was last held in Albany in 2014 as Game of Thrones Moot, and there has been talk about going back ever since.”

She said the group would have a service tomorrow morning, followed by games and competitions in the evening.

“This year, our service teams will be supporting the Albany CWA, Green Skills, the Munda Biddi track, the Bibbulmun Track and Gilcreek Scout Camp,” she said.

“Our games put units against each other in fun and unique ways surrounding the theme of the camp.

“On Sunday, a wide range of off-site activities are offered, ranging from a gourmet tour around surrounding areas and a range of challenging and exciting adventurous activities.

“This year, the gourmet tour is around Albany and Denmark and the adventurous activities consist of a canoe hike along King River and a hike at Castle Rock Skywalk in the Porongurup National Park.”
