Magpies 1 caused an upset in round three of the Albany Netball Association A1 competition to edge out reigning premiers Narrikup 1 in a thrilling finish on Saturday. A powerful first half helped Magpies set-up the three-goal victory over Narrikup and keeps them undefeated. The first quarter was fairly even but Magpies took a narrow three-goal lead into quarter-time. Magpies stretched the advantage to six goals at the main break after outscoring Narrikup by three goals in the second period. However, Narrikup hit back in the third stanza, knocking down 10 goals to eight to reduce the deficit to four goals heading into the last quarter. Though Narrikup won the last term they were unable to reel-in Magpies who held on to win 39-36. Claire Holiday was impressive in defence for the Magpies while Grace Hardiman and Amy Dominiak were also important. Narrikup were best served by Emily Dyson, Bree Dale and Marianne Tutt but basic skill errors let their side down. Kangas 1 registered their first win of the 2021 season after a complete four-quarter performance against Grammar Griffins 1. Young shooter Lily Minter fired in the win, hitting 24 goals to help her side prevail by 10. Kangas got the jump on Grammar to lead by five midway through the first quarter before the latter hit back to reduce the margin to just two at the first change. Grammar hit the first three goals of the second term to hit the front but Kangas responded and by half-time had opened up a five-goal buffer. The margin grew to eight goals by three-quarter-time and Minter hit nine goals in the final quarter to help her side run out comfortable 40-30 winners. Casey Griffiths moved into goal attack in the last quarter and went at 100 per cent but it was not enough to get Grammar back in striking distance. Minter finished the game with 24 goals from 38 attempts and was well supported by Rani Rawlinson (13 goals) while Paige Narkle hit 11 for Grammar and Daisy Stewart-Morgan knocked down nine goals in the second and third. Narrikup 2 also claimed a big scalp to remain undefeated after moving up to A1 this season. After leading by 11 at half-time against last year’s grand finalist Railways 1, Narrikup held on in a tense finish, 50-42. Royals Saints 1 and Bullets 1 played their round three fixture on Wednesday, with Royals Saints prevailing emphatic 54-28 winners to notch their second win of the season. Magpies played their round one rescheduled fixture against Kangas on April 27 and won 33-30.
