Lynley Marie Brown: Six months and one day suspended imprisonment order for injuring daughter during argument

An Albany woman who injured her 34-year-old daughter and destroyed a glass sliding door during an “out of control” domestic violence incident has avoided prison. Lynley Marie Brown, 56, appeared in Albany Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with unlawful wounding. Police prosecutor Sgt Matt Hartfield told the court Brown threw cups and bottles during a fight that broke out while she and her daughter were drinking with family and friends on June 7. Brown’s daughter — who had gone outside to escape the argument — was going back inside when Brown threw a bottle at the glass sliding door, shattering the glass panelling and striking her daughter on the cheek. Brown’s daughter called emergency services and was taken to Albany Health Campus, where she received 14 stitches for three deep lacerations on her cheek. Brown’s defence lawyer Raymond Muir from Aboriginal Legal Services sought a community based order for his client and acknowledged the incident was a “serious example” of domestic violence. Magistrate Erin O’Donnell said the glassing caused “significant bleeding” to the victim’s face. “You let yourself get out of control and you were reckless when throwing things around,” she said. Ms O’Donnell took Brown’s “dated” record into account and sentenced her to six months and one-day imprisonment, suspended for six months.
